The parent cell can divide to produce: 1. two daughter stem cells 2. one daughter and one differentiated cell 3. two differentiated cells Some researchers now believe that some adult stem cells may have the ability to dedifferentiate. Dedifferentiation is the process of which a unipotent, mature cell somehow reverts to a more primitive multipotent or pluripotent form. Another line of research related to dedifferentation is trans-differentiation, the process by which an adult stem cell from one kind of tissue differentiates into a cell of a different type of tissue. Some examples of trans-differentiation that have been reported include the conversion of hematopoietic stem cells into (1) three kinds of brain cells: neurons, oligodendrocytes, and astrocytes; (2) into skeletal muscle cells, (3) cardiac muscle cells, and (4) liver cells; Stem cells are named and classified according to their origin: Embyronic Stem(ES) cells are found in the innter cell mass (ICM) of the blastocyst. Embyronal Carcinoma EC cells are obtained from immature teratomas Embyronic Germ EG cells are derived from primordial germ cells, present in the gonadal ridge of a fetus. EG cells normally develop into mature gametes (eggs and sperm). Adult stem cells are undifferentiated cells present in mature tissue or organs, dispersed among the differentiated cells that make up that tissue or organ. Adult stem cells are uncommon, usually present in a concentration of about one stem cell for every 100000 specialized cells. In addition to these, there are stem cells with characteristics similar to those of adult stem cells that are found in blood remaining in the umbilical cord that is usually discarded after the birth of a baby. One major line of stem cell research has been the search for environments that discourage cells from differentiating, while encouraging them to proliferate. A second major line of research has had the opposite goal: to find environments that coax stem cells to differentiate into one or another kind of specialized cell. Some substances have been found to be effective in directing the differentiation of stem cells We need to find an ethical method of harvesting pluripotent stem cells or an ability to transform unipotent cells into pluripotent cells. However, chronic insults such as ongoing exposure to alcohol or hepatitis C virus, may result in the formation of collagen based scars and the development of cirrhosis. This latter process is associated with loss of functional liver tissue, so may progress to liver failure. This gives hope for heavy drinkers; liver function may be restored, sometimes after many years of abuse, as long as the person stops drinking before cirrhosis is established. Kidneys In the kidneys, epithelial tissues lining renal tubules may regenerate but whole nephrons do not. This means that mild damage to the kidneys will heal completely but more extensive injuries will result in scar formation. The glomeruli are the balls of capillaries within a Bowman's capsule and do not regenerate after injury. However, if one kidney is removed, the glomeruli in the other kidney enlarge to compensate.

In an optimistic glimpse into the future, Dr. George Christ introduces the growing concept of regenerative medicine, and its role in the healing of veterans and civilians. Dr. George Christ is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia. He is also the Director of Basic and Translational Research in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the UVA Medical School. He is also a co-inventor of more than 26 patents related to gene therapy for the treatment of human smooth muscle disorders and tissue engineering technologies.
